Mahatma, Episode 5: Co-operation

A Film By

India Public Television

Co-operation is essential for the practice of nonviolence and harmony. Even during the “Noncooperation” movement, Gandhiji would cooperate with the authorities in the conduct of their duties. H is various satyagraha movements became possible only because of co-operation among large masses of people. The Salt Satyagraha in 1930 was the best example of mass participation, including that by women, in a completely non-violent struggle. He believed in carrying forward the family tradition of co-operation into all spheres of social life.

Competition that hurts, or what he called as ’soul-corroding”, is a sign of violence. He encouraged co-operative effort in the field of khadi production, in farming and in various other such areas. He believed that land yielded maximum return when worked co-operatively.

But co-operation should not be forced. To be non-violent, it should be voluntary. Co-operation through violence destroys individuality, the very basis of real and abiding progress.
